After Ronaldo left Portugal's national team training camp, controversy intensified. Jorge Jesus initially had no plans to play Ronaldo, but then instructed him to warm up, saying he intended to bring him on, only to ultimately leave him on the bench. Piers Morgan retweeted a 2024 interview with Ancelotti to mock Jesus.
On January 17, 2024, Real Madrid defeated Las Palmas 2-1 away in matchday 22 of the 2023/24 LaLiga season. Modric did not play. After the match, a reporter asked, "Why didn't Modric play a single minute today, and why didn't he even warm up?"
Ancelotti replied: "If I'm not confident he will play, I won't have Modric warm up. I respect him too much to do that."
