Cardiff City are close to signing Man City's 17-year-old midfielder Charlie Holt, according to UK media outlet WalesOnline. Cardiff City are adjusting their recruitment strategy, increasingly focusing on bringing in young players with development potential, and Holt is considered a player who can progress and increase his value in the coming years.

It is understood that Holt has been training with Cardiff City for the past few weeks and has already participated in first-team training. His performance has impressed head coach Erol Bulut and his coaching staff.
Cardiff City's recruitment department is very optimistic about Holt's potential, viewing the signing of the young midfielder as an important acquisition. Unlike their past strategy of primarily relying on established players, Cardiff City now prefers to seek young players who can develop within the club's system and enhance the team's overall value in the future.
Holt's technical attributes also meet Cardiff City's requirements. He is an energetic midfielder with good ball control and passing skills, capable of influencing the game in both attack and defence. His performances during first-team training sessions have already caught the attention of the coaching staff.
If the deal goes through, Holt will become the second young player Cardiff City has signed from Man City in recent months. This summer, Cardiff City already signed 16-year-old midfielder Kacey McAteer from Man City.
It is worth noting that the Cardiff City coaching staff has close ties with Man City's academy system. Head coach Erol Bulut and assistant coach Lee Riley have both worked extensively with Man City's academy and are very familiar with the young players developed there.
Riley, in particular, previously worked within the Man City academy system before moving to South Wales to reunite with Erol Bulut. The strong relationship between the two clubs has also facilitated Cardiff City's acquisition of young Man City players.
Holt came through the Man City academy system and is an England youth international. He signed an academy scholarship with Man City in June 2025 and was promoted to the Man City U18 squad for the 2025/26 season.
Last season, Holt made 12 league appearances for the Man City U18 team and helped Oliver Rice's side win the U18 Premier League North title.
According to Cardiff City's current plan, Holt is expected to initially join the U21 squad after signing, though the club also hopes he will get ample opportunities to train with the first team to accelerate his development.
Cardiff City hopes that Holt, like other young players at the club, will gradually adapt to the demands of senior football and ultimately earn a place in Erol Bulut's first-team squad based on his performances.
