According to Japanese media outlet "FOOTBALL ZONE", Japanese goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda, currently playing for Vissel Kobe, recently gave an exclusive interview discussing the growing importance of goalkeeper footwork in modern football. He believes that Japanese football, in its development and evaluation of goalkeepers, places too much emphasis on goalkeepers' ability to participate in ball distribution from the back, while to some degree overlooking the goalkeeper's most important duty: preventing opponents from scoring.

In recent years, with the continuous evolution of football tactics, goalkeepers participating in ball distribution from the back has become a trend. Goalkeepers who can handle the ball and participate in passing and possession like outfield players are increasingly valued. However, Shuichi Gonda, who has played in several European countries, holds a different view.
Shuichi Gonda stated: "I've always felt that Japan may be the only place that repeatedly emphasizes 'ball distribution from the back' and 'footwork' the way it does now. Of course, it's good for goalkeepers to have excellent footwork—it's an essential skill in modern football. But looking at the world, no matter how skilled a goalkeeper is at organizing play, if they cannot stop basic shots, they certainly won't earn recognition."
Gonda's main concern is that the criteria for evaluating goalkeepers in Japanese football, from youth development to the professional level, are gradually drifting away from the core responsibility of protecting the goal.
He said: "Especially with young players, when I see some goalkeepers get recognized and opportunities to play because they're good at distributing the ball, rather than because of their shot-stopping ability, I genuinely feel sorry for them."
"Because when they aspire to reach the first team, professional football levels, or even top foreign leagues, goalkeepers who cannot stop shots will be the first to lose recognition. I believe we cannot misunderstand the most fundamental duty of the goalkeeper position."
At the same time, Shuichi Gonda also questioned the concept of modern football tactics that rely on goalkeepers to participate in ball distribution from the back.
He stated: "As I understand it, is it because 10 outfield players cannot independently complete ball distribution from the back that a team needs to rely on the goalkeeper? Originally, attacking and defending on the pitch is a symmetric 10-against-10 situation. If, because they cannot break through the opponent's pressing, the goalkeeper at the back participating in the attack becomes inevitable, I think this somewhat misses the point of the issue."
According to Shuichi Gonda's view, the numerical advantage gained when a goalkeeper participates in ball distribution should only be considered a tactical choice for the team, not a decisive criterion for evaluating a goalkeeper's ability.
He said: "If we always believe that passing and ball distribution cannot be completed without the goalkeeper's participation, then ultimately we'll reach an extreme conclusion: 'a goalkeeper without good footwork cannot play.'"
"But the goalkeeper is the player farthest from the opponent's goal and is the only special position on the team permitted to touch the ball with their hands. We absolutely must not forget the goalkeeper's most fundamental responsibility."
Shuichi Gonda previously played for SV Horn in Austria, Portimonense in Portugal, and Debrecen in Hungary, while representing the Japanese national team against top teams worldwide. Based on these experiences, he believes that European football's criteria for evaluating goalkeepers are actually simpler and stricter.
Shuichi Gonda stated: "Abroad, the higher the level of competition, the more directly a head coach's fate is tied to each match's result. If a head coach tells a goalkeeper, 'Don't worry, just distribute from the back,' and then loses because of it, that coach could be fired."
"Coaches who fail to deliver results are typically dismissed quickly. Because of this, the primary requirement coaches set for goalkeepers is always to help the team win, which means conceding as few goals as possible."
He also pointed out that whether it's communication between the goalkeeper and teammates or participating in ball distribution, fundamentally these are only means to help the team reduce the likelihood of conceding goals.
Shuichi Gonda said: "Speaking in extremes, even if a goalkeeper cannot communicate verbally with teammates, cannot organize play, and can only kick long balls, as long as he can stop every shot and consistently keep a clean sheet, the coach will definitely use him."
"Conversely, even if a goalkeeper has excellent footwork and accurate passing, if he concedes a goal every match, he also cannot increase the team's chances of winning."
"Ultimately, the best goalkeeper is one who maximizes the use of his hands to keep the team from conceding. For a goalkeeper, there is no duty more important than protecting the goal."
Finally, Shuichi Gonda emphasized that he does not entirely deny the value of goalkeepers participating in ball distribution from the back. Rather, he believes that professional players must clarify the relationship between applying technique and match results.
He said: "For professional players, the worst thing that can happen is attempting to distribute from the back and then conceding a goal due to a mistake. Of course, being willing to take risks is important, but we work in an environment where we must deliver results."
"In fact, it's the same when I play for the Japanese national team. Regardless of the level, we absolutely cannot have any misunderstanding about this."
Shuichi Gonda believes that modern football certainly demands that goalkeepers master a broader range of comprehensive skills, but these abilities should not override shot-stopping and preventing goals. For the unique goalkeeper position, protecting the goal remains the most important responsibility.
