Walid Regragui, former Morocco national team coach, has shared his thoughts on the tension between Ronaldo and the Portuguese national team.

Speaking on Canal+'s "Football Club" program, Regragui said: "Ronaldo has contributed enormously, because many Portuguese players and the current state of Portuguese football owe a great debt to Cristiano."
He continued: "That doesn't mean he can do whatever he wants, but I think the way recent events have been handled has been very poor. I believe they should have sat down with him and said, 'Listen, this needs to stop now.'"
Regragui emphasized: "Moreover, the national team coach is someone Ronaldo worked with at Al Nassr. They must have discussed beforehand whether he would continue playing or not. Both sides have been hurt—it's unfortunate."
However, Regragui went on to compare how Portugal has treated Ronaldo with how Argentina has treated Messi, highlighting a stark difference between the two situations.
He stated: "I think that, out of pride, Ronaldo also wants to reach 1,000 goals, and perhaps he hoped to achieve this milestone while wearing the Portuguese national team jersey. But ultimately, the image that was projected wasn't good."
He added: "What I mean is, something like this would never happen in Argentina. The respect that Argentines have for Messi, and the attitude of the players toward him—I've never felt that the Portuguese have that same feeling toward Ronaldo."
He concluded: "The Portuguese have never thought about running and fighting for Ronaldo, whereas the Argentines accepted Messi, even during the recent World Cup. But in Portugal, this has never been the case."
