European football expert Andy Brassell has noted the stark contrast in how Mbappe is being treated compared to Gareth Bale, who, despite bringing numerous trophies to the team, never truly won over Real Madrid fans.

"You look at Gareth Bale, and how he was vilified, demonized, and practically hounded out of the club," Brassell said on talkSPORT's Trans Euro Express.

"This is a man who genuinely won Real Madrid Champions League titles.

"But that's not the case for Mbappe right now. We can sit here and say he has 94 goals in 112 appearances, but that doesn't really matter at the moment."

If Mbappe fails to help Real Madrid win any trophies this season, it would mark the club's third consecutive season without silverware.

Real Madrid has not experienced such a long trophy drought in over 20 years. The last time they went three consecutive seasons without a major trophy was from 2003/04 to 2005/06.

Will Real Madrid sell Mbappe?

Brassell believes that if history repeats itself, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez might be forced to confront a previously unimaginable situation.

"If Real Madrid ends the season with nothing, which I think is at least a possibility, what do they do with Mbappe?" Brassell asked.

"If they have Mbappe for three seasons and win nothing, what do they do?

"Florentino does not want to look foolish. He pushed for this signing and brought Mbappe into a winning team; it was almost entirely his project. He has to be careful because this will inevitably cause some backlash.

"If this season is not successful, that pressure will be unavoidable."
