Welsh club Swansea City is striving to shed its reputation as a mediocre team and reclaim past glory, with Croatian star L. Modrić serving as a key driving force behind the transformation. Modrić, who currently plays for Real Madrid, invested in Swansea in April 2025 as an investor and co-owner of the club, providing a powerful boost to the team's project.

"This is an incredibly exciting opportunity. Swansea has a strong club identity, passionate fans, and ambitions to compete in the top leagues. As a top-level player, I believe I can bring my experience to the club. My goal is to actively contribute to the club's growth and help build a bright future for the team," Modrić said.

The glory days of Swansea are not so distant: from 2011 to 2018, they spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League. Under Michaël Laudrup, with players like Michu and Ángel Rangel, the team won the League Cup in the 2012/13 season.

Today, the Welsh team is once again on the path to revival. In the first 9 rounds of the Championship, Swansea has accumulated 20 points and topped the table, leading second-place Middlesbrough by two points and West Ham United and Stoke City by four points. This is also the club's best start to a season since the introduction of the three-points system in the Championship.

Another turning point for the team came in late November 2025, when Vitor Matos, former assistant to Klopp at Liverpool, became head coach. When he took over, the team was in 20th place, just four points clear of the relegation zone. By the end of last season, he led the team to 11th place, with a 17-point cushion above the relegation zone. The club extended Matos's contract through 2030. Matos stated that progress is gradual, and while a good foundation was laid last season, they now need to continue working hard to move forward.

The club does not neglect youth development, fielding a starting lineup of 10 academy players in a preseason match. Transfer activity has also been highly effective: the team retained key striker Jean Violett, invested €26.6 million in new players, and brought in several footballers on loan.

The team continues to adhere to its previous playing philosophy based on possession, "Swanselona." Matos was named Championship Manager of the Month in August; the team leads the league in total passes with 4,845 and ranks second in possession with 59.4%; they are sixth in goals scored and fourth in shots on target.

The defense has also been reliable: just 7 goals conceded, the best record in the entire Championship, and 4 clean sheets, also the best in the league. Their high defensive line and offside trap tactics have proven particularly effective. With the support of L. Modrić and steady improvement in strength, Swansea's dream of returning to the top division has reignited.
