Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty in the 94th minute as Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Real Betis at the Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla in LaLiga.

Troy Parrott's 81st-minute strike dealt Jose Mourinho his first defeat since returning as Madrid boss, though it was not without late drama, as Carlos Espi also saw a goal ruled out for offside before Mbappe's stoppage-time miss.

Madrid started on the front foot as Dean Huijsen saw a poked effort saved by Alvaro Valles, while Vinicius Junior inexplicably missed from inside the six-yard box 15 minutes in, hitting the post despite having the goal at his mercy.

Los Blancos continued to dominate and Mbappe could not believe he did not score before half-time, with both Natan and Marc Bartra blocking shots on the line in quick succession to deny the Frenchman.

Huijsen also struck the crossbar with a header before the break, though Madrid struggled to impose themselves the same way in the second half as Betis provided more resistance in the middle of the pitch.

Parrott, who was introduced in the 68th minute, then scored his first goal in Betis colours as he reacted fastest to the rebound after Thibaut Courtois went full stretch to keep out Nelson Deossa's header.

Madrid pushed hard for an equaliser and saw Mbappe's looping cross hit the woodwork before Espi's acrobatic finish in the 87th minute was ruled out by the VAR for offside, though there was still one more key moment to come.

Vinicius made a surging run into the box and was brought down by Natan, though Valles sent the home fans into raptures as he saved Mbappe's penalty and celebrated in the Madrid forward's face.

Madrid left to rue missed chances

Ahead of Friday's clash, Mourinho said his Madrid side must be great if they are to pick up three points away to Betis, and their wasteful finishing proved to be very costly in the end.

Madrid failed to score despite accumulating 3.16 expected goals (xG) from their 20 attempts, with Mbappe responsible for 1.78 of that total.

He led his side for shots (seven), touches in the box (17) and Opta-defined big chances (four).

Arda Guler will feel he did all he could, creating seven chances for Madrid – Betis only created six as a team – but a strong defensive display helped the hosts get over the line.

Hector Bellerin was particularly impressive up against Vinicius on the left wing; the Spaniard won a match-high eight duels (8/14) while also winning six of his seven tackles, also a match-high.
