Curtis Jones was allowed to leave Liverpool this summer and made a move to Italian giants Inter Milan but he had a moment to forget as he made his Champions League debut against Real Madrid

Curtis Jones was left red-faced on his Champions League debut for Inter Milan after gifting Kylian Mbappe a goal. The ex-Liverpool man joined the Italian giants this summer in a £30m switch from Anfield.

And he had enjoyed a positive start to life with his new employers so far, albeit that came to an abrupt end at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening. The midfielder’s sloppy pass was picked off by Mbappe as Inter attempted to play themselves out.

Yann Bisseck tried to intervene but missed his challenge completely, allowing Mbappe to skip past him and hammer the ball home for his first Champions League goal of the campaign.

Jones’ howler comes just days after he admitted that boss Cristian Chivu - who is unlikely to be thrilled with his mistake - was a driving force behind his move to Italy.

He said: "There’s a reason I came here: the phone calls we had, how the team plays, his tactical ideas, and how he works every single day.

"It’s the small things he says, things that might seem minor but end up having a massive impact. Plus, he has immense experience and played at the highest level himself. He’s managed the squad brilliantly. He’s ‘one of us,’ and to me, that’s fundamental."

Jones added: "I just feel at home with the lads. Since the first day, they've been unbelievable and so I can just be myself. Of course I've got a point to prove but I know that if I'm just myself, the lads will like me, the staff and the fans as well.”

Jones almost went some way to atoning for his error midway through the first-half, however, as his powerful effort thumped off of the crossbar.

Fortunately for Jones, he was not the only one left with his head in his hands at the Bernabeu. Goalkeeper Josep Martínez also committed a similar - if slightly worse - howler to hand the home side a 2-0 lead.

The stopper attempted a Cruyff turn in the penalty area when closed down by Federico Valverde. But he got it all wrong, with the Uruguayan midfielder tapping home. Like Jones, he then made up for his mistake with a brilliant double save just before half time.

Jones, Martinez and their Inter Milan teammates will certainly hope for better fortune over the coming weeks. They resume their Serie A campaign this weekend against Udinese before a clash with Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Chivu’s side have some time to wait before their next Champions League clash against Club Brugge in mid-October.
