Miguel Gutierrez scored one goal and assisted another as Bayer Leverkusen headed into the international break with a 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig.

Patrik Schick continued his fine Bundesliga scoring run with an excellent volleyed finish from Gutierrez’s delivery on the stroke of half-time, before the full-back added a goal of his own after the interval.

A hard-fought opening was bereft of clear-cut chances, though Neil El Aynaoui and Ezechiel Banzuzi both tested Mark Flekken.

Aleix Garcia blazed over in response down the other end, before Romulo missed a glorious headed chance from inside the six-yard box for Leipzig.

Romulo thought he had made amends by teeing up Christopher Nkunku to finish, but a VAR check found the Brazilian striker offside in the build-up just past the half-hour mark.

Schick then steered at Maarten Vandevoordt, but the Leverkusen striker would not be denied, sliding to convert an inventive volley into the bottom-left corner, from Gutierrez’s deep left-sided cross.

El Aynaoui again tested Flekken from range after the interval, while Moussa Diaby should have done better with a 51st-minute chance, which was stopped by Vandevoordt.

But Leverkusen got their second soon after when Ibrahim Maza’s low delivery was only half-cleared to Gutierrez, whose left-footed drive slipped under a poor attempted save from Flekken.

Schick went close with another header before seeing a left-footed effort denied as Leverkusen claimed a second league win and made it four games unbeaten across all competitions.

Super Schick delivers again

Having scored a hat-trick the last time these two sides met in 2026-27, Schick will have headed into this one full of confidence.

The Czechia striker has now scored in Leverkusen’s first four matches of this Bundesliga season, becoming the first player to do so for the club since Stefan Kiessling in 2009-10 (five matches in total).

Schick’s opening goal helped Leverkusen continue a fine run, too – they have scored in their last 16 league matches, the longest ongoing scoring streak of any top-flight team.

It is an entirely different story for Leipzig, who have lost their last four away matches in the Bundesliga. They also lost back-to-back games on the road for only the second time in their history in the competition, after 2021-22.

Martin Demichelis’ side offered little in attack, accumulating just 0.85 expected goals (xG) to their hosts’ 2.19.

Leipzig must use the international break to reset after dropping down to eighth, with Leverkusen three places ahead and boasting a point more than their six.
