A stunning late save from Hannah Hampton preserved a point for Chelsea as they played out a 0-0 draw with Lyon in the Women's Champions League.

Salma Paralluelo had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, while Chelsea had two penalties overturned by VAR, but it was Hampton's last-gasp heroics that salvaged a point.

Chelsea made a strong start and had the first shot on target as Melvine Malard brilliantly improvised by looping an overhead volley towards goal, but it was an easy catch for Mala Grohs.

Lyon did not take long to grow into the game, though, and Melchie Dumornay threaded it through to Paralluelo, who forced a smart save out of Hampton.

Dumornay drilled narrowly wide shortly after, with Marie-Antoinette Katoto then scuffing her attempt straight at Hampton.

Selma Bacha and Caroline Weir both failed to hit the target as Lyon finished the half on top, and the cagey nature of the game carried over after the break.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Tarciane caught Sjoeke Nusken late in the box, but after the referee initially pointed to the spot, a VAR review spotted Lucy Bronze offside in the build-up, and the penalty was overturned.

Lyon thought they had found a potential winner in the 72nd minute after Paralluelo raced onto another superb Dumornay pass and swept her finish past Hampton, but she set off too early, with the offside flag denying her.

Chelsea had another penalty overturned moments later after Lauren James went to ground, but there was not much in the challenge from Damaris Egurrola.

Grohs was fully behind James' first-time effort to deny Chelsea a winner, and just moments later, Hampton made a brilliant save at full stretch to keep out Ada Hegerberg's looping header.

Both sides struggle to find their golden touch

Chelsea have made a stuttering start to the season, struggling to find their free-flowing best in front of goal, but the same cannot be said of Lyon, who beat Servette 8-0 last time out in the Champions League.

The chances at Groupama Stadium on Wednesday were few and far between, though, with both sides ultimately finishing with nine shots apiece after the game opened up in the last five minutes plus stoppage time.

Lyon tested Hampton four times, while Paralluelo scored a lovely goal, if only she had slowed her run behind Bronze slightly better. The expected goals (xG) told the biggest story, with Lyon's 0.78 xG just bettering Chelsea's 0.73.

Ultimately, it was Hampton's late intervention that proved the most vital for Sonia Bompastor on her return to Lyon, as Hegerberg's header looked to be heading in until the goalkeeper got her fingertips to the ball.

Both Chelsea and England will have breathed a sigh of relief that her game did not come to a premature end after a heavy collision with Tabitha Chawinga.

While neither side managed to find a winner in France, Bayern Munich got their first Champions League win of the campaign, beating Benfica 3-0, scoring all of their goals from the 74th minute onwards.
