David Ornstein stated on The Overlap today that after he first broke the news of Manchester City's Financial Fair Play violations last week, he faced online criticism and abuse from some Manchester City fans. He maintains that he conducted his journalism to the highest standards throughout.

This incident could become one of the most significant scandals in football history. The Premier League has now confirmed that 114 of 115 charges against Manchester City have been substantiated, involving serious financial irregularities. Ornstein was the first to report this story in The Athletic, and on today's show, he explained how he obtained the information and verified each detail before publication. As one of the most credible journalists in the sport, he maintains that despite online criticism and abuse from Manchester City fans, he followed proper procedures.

Speaking about being the first to report the charges against Manchester City, Ornstein said: "This is one of the most concerning events in English football history, European football history, and indeed world football history. I don't take pleasure in it. I'm not excited that a club has been found to have engaged in widespread breaches of the rules, which they continue to deny.

You just have to do your job, and Manchester City and other clubs understand that. That's why I believe the entire process has been relatively amicable, because I've done this throughout my career. Moreover, this is a matter of public interest.

I've faced considerable criticism and abuse from Manchester City fans who claim someone called me and leaked information to me. But this isn't a leak. I don't consider it a leak. You may have a different definition of what constitutes a leak. I believe I uncovered this story and followed proper procedures to report this extremely significant news. What's interesting is that I haven't received any formal complaints from the parties involved. All the complaints and criticism have come from social media, because people are understandably sensitive and upset."
