According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona president Joan Laporta met with Aleksander Ceferin and Nasser Al-Khelaifi this week in Copenhagen during the 33rd General Assembly of the European Football Club Association (EFC). Laporta hopes to further strengthen Barcelona's relationships with UEFA and EFC, and to join the EFC Executive Board through elections at the next General Assembly in 2027.

EFC is the successor organization to the European Club Association (ECA). Al-Khelaifi is currently Paris Saint-Germain president and EFC president, while Ceferin is UEFA president. Barcelona's relationship with these two organizations previously faced serious crisis, but after overcoming that period, Laporta is now seeking to continue rebuilding ties.
A year ago, Barcelona participated as a guest at the EFC General Assembly 2025 in Rome, beginning to restore good relations with both EFC and UEFA. Months later, in early 2025, before the club presidential election process began, Barcelona applied to rejoin EFC and was subsequently approved. Barcelona had previously withdrawn from the organization years earlier due to involvement in the Super League project. On February 13 this year, after Barcelona announced its withdrawal from the Super League, the EFC Executive Board unanimously approved the club's reaccession application. Laporta now aims to secure a vice-president position, with Al-Khelaifi's support for this move.
Barcelona's return to EFC is also part of the club's broader effort to repair its relationship with UEFA. Currently, UEFA and EFC work closely together, a different dynamic from UEFA's relationship with ECA years ago. Ceferin and Al-Khelaifi are allies, and Laporta has built mutual trust with both, consistently maintaining good relations.
One topic discussed in Barcelona's negotiations with UEFA concerns financial fair play penalties the club faces due to its continued negative net worth. UEFA's initial €60 million fine has been reduced to €15 million, contingent on Barcelona meeting commitments to reduce its net worth deficit. However, as Spotify Camp Nou has not yet operated at full capacity, the club has begun servicing debt on the "Espai Barça" project, failing to meet this commitment. Barcelona now risks having to pay the remaining fine, but has proposed a similar solution used previously to defer payment. If the club can fulfill its agreed commitments with UEFA, it may avoid paying this fine.
Multiple media outlets have widely reported on Real Madrid's complaint to UEFA against Barcelona in the Negreira case. After UEFA opened an investigation against Barcelona, investigators withdrew because Spanish courts had not reached a guilty verdict, meaning Barcelona has not faced UEFA sanctions since then. The judicial investigation is in its final stages, and the judge overseeing the case rejected an extension of the investigation period. Real Madrid had previously requested an extension, hoping to prolong the investigation. According to the report, without a guilty verdict related to sports corruption, UEFA has no authority to intervene.
The selection of Spotify Camp Nou as the venue for the 2029 Champions League final demonstrates Barcelona's continued improvement in its relationship with UEFA and refutes certain "reports" about potential sanctions against the club. Laporta's trip to Copenhagen has further advanced these efforts to maintain Barcelona's good relations with UEFA and EFC.
