Original A Bola report

Behind the scenes, mediation efforts have made significant progress, but the biggest crisis in Portugal national team history remains unresolved.

Jorge Jesus has given the green light for an urgent meeting to bridge the gap with Ronaldo and has accepted the mediation proposal put forward by the Portuguese Football Federation. However, the stalemate in the conflict persists: the ball is now in Ronaldo's court, and the Federation is still awaiting his response.

Jorge Jesus's willingness is an important signal, as the fallout from this rift has spread from the dressing room to public opinion, with protest banners appearing on the streets of Lisbon and high tensions when the national team arrived in Porto.

Despite showing tactical firmness by benching the number 7 in the match against Denmark, the coach understands he must quickly address the reputational crisis and restore minimum stability within the Portugal squad. A crucial UEFA Nations League match against Norway at Estádio do Dragão will take place this Sunday.

The Portuguese Football Federation is working to preserve its relationship with Ronaldo, with the primary goal of rebuilding communication bridges. The Federation refuses to accept a sudden departure and end to the captain's tenure with the national team, and continues to communicate with the player's team to facilitate a meeting at a neutral location.

The squad is currently gathered in northern Portugal, attempting to ignore external distractions, with all eyes on Madrid, where Ronaldo has remained silent since leaving the training camp in Copenhagen.

Jorge Jesus's acceptance has reduced pressure on the coaching staff, placing the captain before a crucial decision: agree to dialogue to seek a consensus solution, or maintain the stalemate, which could end more than two decades of service to Portugal in a disgraceful manner.
