Leicester City defender Darnell Johnson has become the latest young England player to consider moving abroad to further his career.

Johnson, 19, has failed to agree terms to stay at the King Power beyond the summer and is the subject of interest from Dutch clubs Ajax and NEC Breda.

It follows the trend of European sides trying to sign graduates from Premier League academies who are regarded as technically better than their predecessors.

Jadon Sancho, a member of England Under 17s World Cup-winning squad, signed for Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City last summer while Arsenal's Chris Willock has also joined Benfica.

Johnson has grown frustrated at club level despite playing at every youth level for England and winning his fourth cap for the Under 20s against Portugal in March.

His only senior appearance for the Foxes came against Morecambe in the Football League Trophy in November and he's been forced to play at right back for the reserves rather than his preferred position of centre half.

Johnson's current deal at Leicester runs out at the end of the season and he has so far rejected the opportunity to extend.

Though compensation will be due because of his age, English clubs may still join the chase for Johnson though the teenager is open to the possibility of following his international team-mate Willock abroad.
