Freddy Adu has joined Polish club Sandecja Nowy Sacz on trial, though his new manager insists he is against the move and was not consulted.

Adu, an attacking midfielder, was once one of the most coveted young players in the game when, in 2004 at the age of 14, he signed a professional contract with DC United.

However, Adu has never reached the heights expected and his nomadic career has now taken him to Poland and Nowy Sacz, who are Ekstraklasa new boys after earning promotion last season.

The move though was not the work of his new manager Radoslaw Mrockowski who insists he was not aware the now 28-year-old would be joining for a trial

'I just heard someone picked him up from the airport,' Mroczkowski said before refusing to hold back with his assessment of the club's dealings.

'This is not my idea, so let's face it, the man who wants to have Frank [sic] Adu on the team, I do not accept this, it was not consulted with me.

'I will not test it, as someone else wants, and they can do it. In my opinion, the club is so ridiculous. Instead of building a team in a sensible way, we are looking for old vacuum cleaners.'

As a teenager, Adu was swiftly linked with moves to Chelsea and Manchester United and was even pictured in United's training gear at Carrington in 2006, but moved to Real Salt Lake in 2007 before signing for Benfica later that year.

But he struggled to make a lasting impression in Portugal and headed out on several loan spells, including to French side Monaco in 2008.

Adu returned to the United States in 2011 with Philadelphia Union and was there for two years, making 35 appearances and scoring seven times.

Since then, he has played for Bahia, a second-tier Brazilian side, Jagodina, a Serbian SuperLig club and KuPS in Finland's Premier League, who sent him on loan to KuFu 98 in 2015.

Later that year, he returned again to his homeland to join Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Adu, who has 17 caps for the United States earned between 2006-11, with two goals, went on trial with Portland Timbers ahead of the 2017 MLS season but did not earn a contract.

Nowy Sacz would now be the 14th club of his career.
