According to ESPN Brazil, Memphis Depay spoke publicly for the first time three days after Corinthians were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals by Estudiantes de La Plata. The Dutch forward, who missed a penalty kick in the final moments of the match, apologized to Corinthians fans via his personal social media, calling it the "biggest disappointment" of his career.

Depay wrote: "I want to apologize to the fans and to the millions who believed we could achieve the dream of winning the Copa Libertadores. My heart is broken. The penalty that could have kept us in the game became the biggest disappointment of my career."

"At that moment, I was confident in how I was taking the penalty, because I had taken it the same way many times in my career, but it truly hurts that things ended this way."

Speaking about his experience since joining Corinthians, Depay said: "The reason I came to this great club was to show my talent, discipline, and professionalism. Two years have passed, and we have created many beautiful memories together, but those are now behind us."

Depay also admitted that his performance this season has not been ideal: "I renewed my contract with full understanding of the situation. I knew it wouldn't be easy because, so far this season, I haven't performed well. I am very grateful for such immense support from everyone. The fans showed up when I needed them most, and that's why it hurts even more for things to end this way."

"I understand and accept all the criticism and emotions that are emerging now, but I will never give up. I will work hard to continue creating greater history at this club and bring Corinthians and its fans back to where they belong."

Depay apologized to the fans again and stated that he would not back down: "So, I want to apologize again to all those who truly love this club. Now it's either work harder or go home, and I'm not the kind of man who hides behind excuses."

"I know that what comes next won't be easy, but those who know me know that I am a fighter. I will stay on the battlefield because the dream we all share is not dead, at least not in my heart."

Finally, Depay also responded to those who celebrated Corinthians' elimination: "For those who are rejoicing in our pain, just remember that this will not change the journey we are on. Life will teach everyone a lesson at the right time."
