According to L'Équipe, Mbappé discussed his reasons for joining On and plans to collaborate with the brand on football boots in an interview.

On will be Mbappé's kit and equipment sponsor for the next decade and is a new entrant to the football market. Founded in 2010 with a focus on running shoes, the company now has approximately 2,500 employees. A day after Real Madrid's 1-2 loss to Atlético Madrid, Mbappé was interviewed at On's headquarters alongside co-founder and co-chairman David Allemann and Thierry Henry, who has been appointed as Head of Football.
After 20 years with Nike, Mbappé's expiring contract made him a target for multiple brands. Nike had offered him an annual salary of €20 million to keep him, equivalent to its deal with LeBron James.
Mbappé said: "When On first approached me, I naturally had doubts because I'd always worked with Nike. But I was open to conversation. After learning more about their plans, I felt I had to be part of this story. I take things one step at a time, and now felt like the right moment. I needed new challenges and to test myself. On gave me the opportunity to co-create products, express my creativity freely, and apply my understanding of the game and my love for football. By combining that with their technology and innovation, we hope to create a successful partnership."
Henry was one of those who spoke with Mbappé over several months. He stated that he was also drawn to the opportunity of partnering with a brand entering football and being involved in product design. Regarding Mbappé choosing a new brand while his career is still at its peak, Henry believes it's a calculated risk.
Henry said: "Rewards come with risk; you can't score if you don't shoot. We've seen On's success in running, tennis, fitness, and street culture, and we hope to make an impact in football too. More importantly, we always work closely with athletes. Football boots are a player's most important tool; they need the right feel for ball contact and sudden stops after a sprint. We also consider whether the foot slips inside the boot or causes pain during direction changes. Kylian's experience, combined with mine and On's team support, will help us develop the right football boots."
Allemann stated that although On has no history in football, the company always looks to the future. He introduced On's entry into football through LightSpray technology. This technology creates a second-skin-like structure around the foot and is produced by robotic arms, with a pair of boots completed in just 3 minutes.
The football boots and equipment are still in development and are expected to launch in 2027. Mbappé has tested the boots during training sessions but hasn't worn them in official matches; previously he wore blacked-out Nike boots without the logo. Mbappé said: "I'll wear On boots very soon. The product is in the final stages, but it's important to show people the different phases and share the production process. I don't want to suddenly switch to new boots as is typical."
Mbappé will also become one of On's shareholders, following the company's partnership model from 2019 with Roger Federer. Mbappé stated that this wasn't a deciding factor for the partnership, but having a stake in the business was important to him.
Regarding whether a personal Mbappé sub-brand, similar to Jordan, might be developed in the future, Mbappé did not rule it out. He said that life, football, and his career have taught him not to dismiss any possibility, but for now, the priority is establishing On as a core brand in football, with other matters to be discussed later.
Henry is also currently responsible for recruiting other athletes to On. He stated that the company won't aim to surpass Nike, Adidas, or Puma, but will focus on its own projects, learning and improving along the way; in his view, the real competition is mainly about surpassing yourself.
