According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney revealed that those within the club were already aware of JJ Gabriel's potential departure from Manchester United, and there had long been signs of the young forward's desire to play in Spain.

Gabriel had already expressed his wish to leave Manchester United, after which he flew to Barcelona with his family to negotiate a potential transfer. Prior to this, the 16-year-old prospect was expected to join Manchester United's first team squad for the EFL Cup match against Brighton.

Rooney stated: "I think anyone who knows the situation knew this was going to happen sooner or later. To be fair, Manchester United did everything they could. They really tried their best to keep him and wanted him to stay at the club."

"I think everyone has known for a long time that he had a desire to play in Spain. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what people have been hearing for years. The club might have treated him differently from other players because he truly is a very special talent."

"I know and understand this because I was that kind of player at Everton back then. I received similar treatment there, such as extra care, and my parents also received some special arrangements, enjoying more privileges than other players' families. As a club, to retain the best players, sometimes you have to do that."

"It's certainly disappointing because he's a very good player and a lovely kid. You never know if things are irreversible or if he still has a chance to stay, but I think everyone in the know probably knew this day would come."
