According to Football.London, Chelsea's current owners, Clearlake Capital, are evaluating the future of Stamford Bridge, and renovating the existing stadium has now been ruled out.

Clearlake Capital took full control of Chelsea Football Club after the departures of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter were confirmed late Wednesday night. Chelsea confirmed in a statement that Clearlake had bought out the stakes held by Boehly and Walter. Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss remains an important shareholder and partner in the ownership group.

Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano are now in full control of the west London club. The pair stated that there would be no changes to the club's day-to-day operations, leadership, or strategy.

One of the key issues currently being considered by the Chelsea ownership group is addressing the stadium problem. Stamford Bridge has a capacity of just over 40,000, which is lower than other "Big Six" Premier League clubs. Sources say that renovating and redeveloping the existing home ground is not currently an option. Clearlake will either demolish and rebuild Stamford Bridge or relocate to another venue.

Earl's Court, located over a mile from Stamford Bridge, is one option being considered by the Chelsea ownership group. The Earl's Court Development Company has unveiled a £10 billion master plan focused primarily on housing and retail rather than a football stadium. However, Chelsea internally believes there is sufficient space there to meet Clearlake's requirements.

This is a significant priority on Clearlake's agenda, but Chelsea also acknowledges internally that the process is complex and will require considerable time from planning through completion.

If Clearlake chooses to demolish Stamford Bridge, Chelsea could also move to Wembley Stadium. Tottenham used Wembley Stadium for all home matches during the 2017/18 season and for a portion of their matches in the following season.
