Coventry City got off the mark in the Premier League despite a late VAR scare as they overcame Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground on Saturday.

After failing to score or get a point from their opening four games, Coventry finally had cause to celebrate when Jay Dasilva put them in front after 55 minutes.

Oliver Glasner responded by sending on Igor Jesus and Chris Wood, and the Brazilian saw a dink over Carl Rushworth acrobatically cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas.

Jesus thought he had equalised in the 86th minute, only for referee Jarred Gillett to rule the goal out for a foul on Caleb Yirenkyi in the build-up and give Coventry their first top-flight win in 25 years.

While James McAtee warmed the gloves of Carl Rushworth in the opening minute, it was Coventry who appeared to settle into the game better.

Frank Lampard's side struggled to create meaningful openings, though, with Brandon Thomas-Asante failing to beat Matz Sels from the edge of the box with their best chance.

They made the breakthrough 10 minutes after the restart when Daniel Munoz was caught out by Rushworth's goal-kick, allowing Dasilva in behind to bend a composed finish past Matz Sels.

Thomas failed to make the most of a free header three minutes later, but he kept Coventry ahead by hooking away Jesus' goal-bound shot with 14 minutes remaining.

The City Ground was in raptures when Jesus slotted home in the 86th minute, but the contact he made with Yirenkyi proved sufficient for the goal to be ruled out, sealing the three points for the visitors.

The wait is over for Coventry

A whole generation of Coventry fans had never seen their team play in the Premier League before the start of this season.

They went into the match against Forest in danger of losing a fifth straight league game for the first time since February 2017, when they were down in League One.

Both teams struggled going forward in the first half, with the 20 attempts on goal the most in the first half of a goalless Premier League game since January 2025 (Brentford v Liverpool- 24).

That changed 10 minutes after the restart thanks to Dasilva, who netted Coventry's first Premier League goal since Mustapha Hadji in May 2001.

Jesus' goal being ruled out meant Coventry claimed their 100th win in the competition and their first since a 1-0 success over Sunderland in April 2001.

But it was another disappointing result for Forest on home soil – among ever-present sides since the start of last season, only Tottenham have won fewer home games (three) and points (16) in the Premier League than the Tricky Trees (four wins, 21 points).
