Marquinhos scored the all-important goal as Paris Saint-Germain defeated 10-man Marseille 2-1 in Le Classique, climbing to sixth in Ligue 1.

Luis Enrique's side came out on top following a chaotic 11-minute period in the second half, which featured three goals and a red card for Marseille captain Timothy Weah.

Angel Gomes had swiftly cancelled out Ferran Torres' opener, but it was the PSG captain who made the difference to leave Marseille rooted in 17th place going into the international break.

PSG were comfortably the better team throughout the first half, but they only hit the target with one of their 12 shots as poor finishing let Luis Enrique's side down. Desire Doue was just unable to guide his shot into the far corner, while Ousmane Dembele sent a lobbed attempt onto the roof of the net with Jeffrey de Lange beaten.

The sum of Matvey Safonov's first-half work was a routine save from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's piledriver, and Dembele went close to putting PSG in front following a mazy run in stoppage time.

The European champions also started the second half quickly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's backheel drawing another save from De Lange and Joao Neves nodding over. They then got the breakthrough in the 66th minute, as substitute Ferran ghosted into the area to meet Doue's inswinging cross with a bullet header.

Marseille hit back only six minutes later as Gomes – who had replaced the injured Igor Paixao in the first half – cleverly cut inside Willian Pacho before slotting past Safonov, but that parity did not last long.

Only two minutes after the equaliser, Marseille failed to fully clear their lines from a corner and Nuno Mendes' ball back into the area was met by Marquinhos. De Lange showed great reflexes to block the centre-back's first effort, but he pounced on the rebound to prod home.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as Weah was beaten by Mendes' give-and-go with Vitinha and dragged the left-back down for his second caution, though they still generated one huge chance to equalise deep into stoppage time, as Nayef Aguerd headed wide on the stretch.

Luis Enrique celebrates landmark victory

Sunday's victory was the 350th of Luis Enrique's managerial career overall, with 121 of those coming with PSG (59 for Barcelona B, 17 for Roma, 15 for Celta Vigo and 138 for Barcelona).

The Spaniard also brought up his 182nd game in charge of PSG, making them the team he has managed most often in his career after surpassing his 181 matches with Barcelona.

The visitors were deserved victors after racking up 31 shots (10 on target) and 4.33 expected goals, compared to Marseille's 12 shots (four on target) and 1.80 xG.

Marseille have now lost four of their five Ligue 1 games this season (W1), the first time they have ever done so at the start of a campaign.

Their four-match losing streak is their worst since April 2015, when they had another four-game run under Marcelo Bielsa, which also included a defeat at home to PSG (2-3).
