According to Corriere della Sera, Roberto Mancini's return to the Italian national team coaching role came despite Serie A's preference for Antonio Conte to take the position.

The report states: "Everyone knew that Serie A hoped Antonio Conte would take over. Beppe Marotta pushed for Conte. However, Malagò was firm: 'I decide, the responsibility is mine: the national team coach is Mancini.'"

The report also noted that Mancini felt fully supported and secure in his position at the time. He even chose to leave his hair its natural grey rather than dyeing it back to its original color.
