The Laureus social media account posted: "Last time with the Argentina team, Lionel Messi – two-time Laureus World Sportsman of the Year."

The Laureus Awards are globally recognized sports honors first presented in 2000, recognizing athletes, teams, and sports-for-good projects that have achieved outstanding results across various sports over the past year.

Messi became the first footballer to win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award in 2020. In 2023, he won the award again, becoming the first team sport athlete to win it twice.
