According to Goal.com, after the match, Lionel Messi refused to take a selfie with a Benin player, sparking controversy as some internet users accused him of racism.

On Wednesday morning, Argentina's national team defeated Benin 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium. After the final whistle, Lionel Messi said goodbye to the Benin players as he wanted to spend his final moments in the pitch with his selected team. An excited Benin player attempted to take a selfie with the 39-year-old Messi, but Messi declined and walked away without responding.

Throughout the match, Messi showed no disrespect toward the Benin players. At the 10-minute mark, the crowd paused the match to warmly applaud Messi, and he responded by waving to the players.

Some internet users strongly criticized the selfie incident, arguing that Messi should have taken a few seconds to take a photo with the Benin player, considering the feelings of those involved in his final international match, rather than displaying such "indifference."

The popular and controversial account "La Catrina Norteña" reposted the video, stating: "Lionel Messi refused to take a photo with an African player at his farewell match. After pushing away a Benin player who wanted a selfie, he walked away with his head held high..." The post sparked various reactions.

While some agreed with the sentiment and accused Messi of racism, others felt there was nothing wrong with the incident. The account "Universador" commented: "Even at the end of his career? Lionel Messi is arrogant and proud—is he a racist? It really seems like it." The account "RHV" also stated: "Racist, we've known it from the beginning." However, the account "menduca61" replied: "Someone warned the Benin player not to approach Messi because the event was on Saturday and they could take photos afterward. Check your facts before criticizing, old man." The account "Luis Linares" wrote: "You're psychologically affected by Lionel Messi. Your anti-Messi propaganda is extremely biased and malicious. You completely ignore the facts."
