Augsburg's rising star, Hannes Behrens, was called up to the German national team for the first time, and he admitted he almost couldn't believe it when he received the notification.

Germany coach Klopp announced a 44-man squad on Thursday morning for the Nations League matches. As reported by Bild on Wednesday evening, Behrens was selected for the squad against the Netherlands and Greece. The two matches will be played on September 24th and September 27th, respectively, with the match against Greece taking place in Augsburg.

The versatile defender joined Augsburg from Hoffenheim this summer for a transfer fee of 3.5 million euros, and he himself did not expect to be called up.

Behrens told Bild: "I couldn't believe it at first because I received a message from an unknown number that wasn't saved in my phone. I wasn't sure if it was really Klopp."

Klopp first sent a text message and then made a call. Behrens said: "I was sitting on the sofa at home, and after receiving the text message, we had a brief phone call. The call wasn't long, and Klopp told me that I had been selected for the senior national team and deserved the call-up. I was speechless at the time, and of course, very excited. I never thought that I would be called up to the national team two months after joining Augsburg, especially since I had never been selected for any U-series national teams before."

Bild reported that the Frankfurt-born player was on loan from Hoffenheim to Heidenheim, who had just been relegated from the Bundesliga, six months ago. He had already been on the radar of the new German national team coach. Under Augsburg coach Manuel Baum, Behrens has become a key player on the left flank, playing the full 90 minutes in all four official matches so far this season. Last weekend, Augsburg drew 2-2 with Leverkusen, and Behrens assisted Gregoritsch in scoring the equalizer. With his consistent performance, he earned the opportunity to prove himself in the German national team.

In addition to Behrens, Klopp also called up Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. Augsburg's sporting director Benjamin Weber said: "We are very happy that two Augsburg players, Hannes Behrens and Finn Dahmen, have been called up to the German senior national team at the same time. Especially Hannes, who has been called up for the first time, this is an affirmation for him, both personally and for Augsburg's development pathway. We are willing to provide young players with the opportunity to prove and improve themselves at a high level."
