English football legend Rooney has stated he will only return to management if Everton or Manchester United offer him a coaching role.

The 40-year-old Manchester United icon has not managed a club since being sacked by Plymouth in late 2024.

Rooney was a superstar at Manchester United during his playing years, winning every major honour at club level. However, he struggled to replicate that success in management roles at Derby County, D.C. United, and Birmingham City.

The former England captain subsequently established himself as a football pundit, regularly appearing on shows such as "Match of the Day" and "The Overlap."

Rooney also features in his new family documentary "The Real Rooneys" and was asked about his future on Virgin Radio, particularly whether he would consider returning to management after nearly two years away from the sport.

Rooney said the prospect is "unlikely" and he would only return if he received an offer from his boyhood club Everton or Manchester United.

"I think that's very unlikely," Rooney said. "I know I've had four tough jobs. The only way I'd come back is if Everton or Manchester United came to me, but that's very unrealistic."

Presenter Chris Evans then asked Rooney which of the two clubs he would prefer to manage.

Rooney replied, "Whichever one comes first!"

Rooney made 559 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 253 goals to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer, before returning to Everton in 2017. He finished his playing career at D.C. United and Derby County, retiring in 2021.

After a turbulent managerial career, Rooney believes his new role as a pundit has given him "purpose".

"I'm not doing it for the money, I'm doing it for purpose, rather than being at home all day," Rooney said.

"I probably won't ever manage again. I think players at the end of their careers usually know when they're going to retire and can prepare for it.

"But with a management job, you don't know if you'll be there for a year, two years, ten years, or three months.

"I'm enjoying 'Match of the Day' and now is the time to learn and improve in the role I'm doing."
