According to RMC Sport, growing concerns are emerging about whether the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 will be held as scheduled.

Originally, AFCON 2027 is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027 in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Although the tournament is less than a year away and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) continues to send positive signals, external concerns about whether the event can be organized on time are mounting.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe recently visited the three host nations and expressed optimism about preparations for AFCON 2027. He reiterated that there is no "Plan B or Plan C" for the tournament and called on the three nations to accelerate construction timelines. Currently, the original plan remains on track.

Motsepe told the media: "I am more confident and satisfied with the preparations." He also hopes to deliver the best Africa Cup of Nations in history. However, according to multiple sources contacted by RMC Sport, an increasing number of African football officials are beginning to doubt whether the event can proceed as scheduled from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

In recent weeks, several figures in African football have expressed concerns about hosting the event. An official from an African football federation told RMC Sport: "We need to act quickly; we cannot wait until the second inspection in January 2027 to make a decision." Like many of his colleagues, he acknowledged that rumors about relocating the event have circulated for months, "but Motsepe has reassured us," he added.

Within CAF, some sources remain optimistic and believe AFCON 2027 will not be relocated.

If the venue must change, countries such as Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire, and Morocco all have the capacity to host an Africa Cup of Nations with adequate facilities.

Other sources have proposed an alternative: swapping the hosting schedules of the two tournaments. This would mean the originally planned AFCON 2028 in Egypt could be moved up to 2027, while the 2027 tournament would be postponed to 2028. This plan would give the three host nations more time to meet 2028 deadlines.
