According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Italian national team's midfield has undergone continuous rotation, with Sandro Tonali gradually establishing himself as a key player, while Nicolò Barella's once-secure position has become increasingly unstable.

During his second spell as head coach of the Italian national team, Roberto Mancini has consistently rotated players and adjusted tactical roles. Particularly in midfield, six different players have been deployed across the three midfield positions over four Nations League matches.
Amid the extensive rotation, Sandro Tonali has emerged as the most central figure in the Azzurri's midfield. The Tottenham signing started his first match as a central midfielder before shifting into a more central playmaking role with organizational responsibilities. He started the first three matches and came off the bench in the fourth for rest. Nicolò Fagioli also impressed during this period. The midfielder, absent from the national team for two years, missed the opening match due to a minor injury but then started against Turkey and France, delivering solid performances. Davide Frattesi also featured prominently in this position, appearing in all four matches with two starts.
The remaining two midfield starts were shared among other options, with Alessandro Romano viewed as a future orchestrator for the Azzurri. The previously almost unshakeable Nicolò Barella started only against Belgium and Turkey. During this period, he was left out of the squad for the trip to Bursa and played just the second half against France.
In essence, Barella no longer holds an undisputed starting position. The latest match also highlighted the emergence of Issa Doumbia in the central midfield role. He featured in all four matches, earning his first start in the most recent outing.
