According to Marca, a drone tribute performance at Messi's farewell ceremony for the Argentine national team went awry, depicting him as a right-footed player.

Messi's farewell ceremony featured tears, goals, and two assists, with the Monumental stadium also paying tribute to the captain. However, the drones in the performance portrayed the No. 10 as right-footed, an image that quickly went viral online.
This occurred after Argentina's 3-0 victory over Benin, which was Messi's last match for Argentina in front of his home fans. As the captain and his teammates remained on the field, hundreds of drones began forming images related to Messi's career in the sky.
One image was a silhouette of Messi before a soccer ball. Fans quickly noticed that the Messi depicted by the drones was shooting with his right foot. The Argentine player is one of the most iconic left-footed players in football history, yet the image showed his non-dominant foot. Comments such as "Chiqui Tapia's doing" and "This mistake is ridiculous" immediately appeared on social media.
Messi has scored with both feet, but his career is inextricably linked to his left foot. Ball control, dribbling, feints, assists, and the vast majority of his goals showcase his left-footed ability.
Therefore, on a night specifically dedicated to celebrating Messi's career, this imagery attracted significant attention. The tribute performance, meant to recreate classic moments from his career, unexpectedly left behind this glaring error.
This was not the only controversial detail. Before the Messi tribute segment began, the drones displayed the logo and name of an insurance company, the match sponsor. This commercial display was met with boos from the stands and criticism from fans, who had expected the performance to begin directly with Messi imagery.
Subsequently, the drones paid tribute to the No. 10, forming the Argentine Football Association crest with three stars, a jersey with "Messi" and the number 10, and images related to his World Cup victory and national team career.
The Qatar World Cup trophy also appeared in the sky. As the performance neared its end, the drones displayed the words "Thank you, Leo!" accompanied by three stars. The final image showed Messi's profile with the Monumental stadium in the background. The Argentine Football Association confirmed the drone performance was part of the farewell ceremony preparations, alongside lights, fireworks, and musical performances.
This was not the first time Messi has been portrayed as right-footed. In early September, LEGO also depicted Messi kicking with his right foot in a tribute animation released after he announced his retirement from the national team.
In the video, a minifigure wearing a No. 10 jersey walked through the stadium tunnel, entered the field, and found a soccer ball. In the final shot, the mini Messi shot with his right foot. LEGO's caption read: "The boy who walked into the tunnel became the legend who changed the sport. Thank you for everything, Leo!"
Fans noticed this detail at the time, pointing out that the minifigure used the wrong foot, adding another anecdote to Messi's left-foot legacy. LEGO has also launched official products inspired by the footballer.
This time, the drones made the mistake. On a night remembered for Messi's emotional moments, his final goal for Argentina, and a farewell ceremony witnessed by over 85,000 people, this "right-footed" version of the No. 10 became one of the evening's most unforgettable images.
