According to Sky Sports, Schalke player El-Fauzi ultimately chose to represent Morocco due to a "heartfelt decision."

"I received the invitation in May, and I was in Morocco at that time," said El-Fauzi. He made his national team debut in Morocco's 5-0 victory over Burundi. Although it was just a friendly match, he could have chosen to switch allegiance to the German Football Association instead. El-Fauzi stated, "But I really enjoyed that experience and got along well with the coach."

El-Fauzi said that everything after that was a "heartfelt decision." He was happy to play alongside Real Madrid star Brahim Díaz, Bayern forward Saibari, and others. "Morocco has performed very strongly in the past two World Cups. The team is slowly getting stronger, and I really want to be a part of it. I'm very much looking forward to it."
