Thomas Tuchel was left to rue England's mistakes and missed chances as they were beaten 3-2 by Spain in the opening match of their Nations League campaign.

England had threatened to give Spain a scare after coming from behind – after a Marc Guehi mistake gifted Lamine Yamal a second-minute opener – through Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane before half-time.

However after the break, Kane then missed a penalty, rattling the crossbar after his standing leg slipped, and Spain mounted a comeback of their own.

Nico O'Reilly gifted the ball to Spain deep in England's half, with Alex Baena ultimately profiting before Mikel Oyarzabal netted the winner in the 74th minute, coming back to haunt England after scoring the winning goal at Euro 2024.

England have conceded 3+ goals in consecutive matches for the first time since June 1995 (3-3 v Sweden, 1-3 v Brazil on that occasion).

The Three Lions have also conceded 13 goals in their last six matches in all competitions, almost double the total they had shipped in their first 17 under Tuchel (seven).

This is the first time England have made two errors leading to a goal in a competitive match since June 2019 against the Netherlands, also in the Nations League.

"Terrible start, the worst start possible," Tuchel told ITV Sport.

"It makes it so, so difficult to be behind against this type of team. After 10-12 minutes, I think we were the better team. We dominated in the opponent's half.

"We created and scored two goals, our best 15 minutes after the whistle. We couldn't convert the penalty – I think then maybe Spain would have believed that their long run of unbeaten games ends here.

"Another big, big mistake for 2-2. The third goal was the only goal they really scored. Just is what it is. We have to keep going and learn from it. Take what is positive and take the points back to the Czech Republic."

Spain are now unbeaten in their last 39 games (in 90 minutes), extending the longest such streak by a European nation (W30 D9).

And it meant they piled more worry on England, who have won just six of their last 16 matches against nations ranked in FIFA's top 10.

"I was not in charge for all of these 16 matches, for sure not, and I think we did everything to beat Spain," said Tuchel.

"Details matter on this kind of level. Like I said, the amount of clear-cut mistakes was too high on our side, unfortunately, and in the last 20 metres they were more composed and more clinical to convert our ball-losses into clear-cut chances.

"We will keep on pushing this team.

"We proved it at the World Cup that we are capable to do it in tournaments. We cannot prove it in the result [against Spain], but I think the way we played was enough to beat them."
