On September 28, the Netherlands national team officially announced that Gakpo would be unable to participate in the remaining matches of this international break.

The Dutch forward departed the away match against Serbia on Sunday with an injury, which the Netherlands won 2-1. Gakpo will return to his club Liverpool, and the Dutch federation will not call up a replacement.

The Netherlands will travel to Thessaloniki to face Greece on Thursday and then host Serbia on Sunday, October 4, at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven to conclude this international break.
