Former striker Di Canio discussed the Italian national team, Dimarco, and Bastoni on Italy's Sky Sport channel.

Di Canio stated: "Setting aside everything that's happened, I'm looking at two halves from two matches: the first half against Turkey, where the opponent was limited and we took control; and the first half against France, where you have to accept the opponent's ball possession and acknowledge their superiority. This combination is ideal and could allow this team to compete again. Mancini has been affected by criticism: his initial statements were perhaps excessive, but he's intelligent and knows that if results don't come, he'll pay double for it."
Di Canio continued: "But he wants to create something similar to what we've seen in the past: these two matches show us a team reconnecting with its fans. The players are giving everything to defend the Italian national team jersey. I don't think Dimarco is suited to playing left-back in a four-man defense: he has attacking prowess, but he's older now, and there's always an injury risk with constant explosive sprints. It's not easy to put him in that position and expect him to perform like he does for Inter Milan. This doesn't mean he shouldn't play there, but Mancini needs to find solutions. We can't just look at the final pass; the process also requires cooperation: rotating positions needs a system, and it requires demonstrating skill and creativity in movement, which is different from how he operates as a wing-back at Inter Milan."
Di Canio added: "After getting used to playing as a wing-back in a five-man defense, switching to left-back in a four-man defense will feel completely different, but he's a mature player. Bastoni and the other center-backs didn't have much to do; the opponent didn't have a true striker like Pio Esposito to deal with, but they were determined, focused, and always in the right place at the right time. Not giving the opponent easy scoring opportunities shows the team maintains cohesion overall. I liked Bastoni's slightly sharp attitude in the press conference, because he proved it with his performance against France. He shouldn't have been in that scoring position; it should have been a midfielder there, but he finished decisively and then scored, calmly and concentrating. I like players with personality who can prove themselves through their actions. There are two possibilities: either you just talk big and end up looking foolish, or you have personality, and I appreciate that because you can deliver. Bastoni is doing that. Don't focus on the Bosnia match; that defeat certainly carries weight, but you have to use your personality to overcome it and turn it into motivation. This can also help a coach who is regaining his authority."
