According to the Liverpool Echo, former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann believes that Wirtz may no longer believe he can succeed at Liverpool and might regret joining the Premier League.

Hamann stated that Wirtz often seemed unhappy when playing for Liverpool: "I don't know if he still believes he can succeed. Watching him play for Liverpool, I often feel that he's not happy."
"He used to play with so much joy; you could see it in every move. He was just enjoying the game, playing like a child on the pitch. But I haven't seen that from him in months. I don't know if he still has the confidence to keep going. With every game he plays, every week that passes, the criticism grows, and his belief that 'I will succeed' might diminish. At least for now, he doesn't give me that impression."
Hamann believes that Wirtz's decision to play in England and prove himself was initially a good one, but in hindsight, he might not make that choice again.
Chelsea legend Frank Leboeuf, however, believes that Wirtz does not have much time left to turn things around at Liverpool. In his final season at Leverkusen, Wirtz made 45 appearances, contributing 16 goals and 15 assists. In the 2023/24 season, he played 49 times, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists, helping Xabi Alonso's team win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. Leverkusen lost to Atalanta in the Europa League final, failing to complete an unbeaten treble.
Leboeuf stated on ESPN FC that Wirtz has yet to replicate his previous performances at Anfield, and with high expectations, he needs to deliver results quickly: "Players have a very short amount of time after joining a club, especially given the season Wirtz had at Leverkusen. Expectations are very high."
Leboeuf disagreed with comparisons between Wirtz and Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah when they first arrived in England. He noted that neither was well-known at the time; De Bruyne left Chelsea, and Salah went to Roma before developing into the players they became. There weren't such high expectations for them then. Wirtz, however, was considered a marquee signing when he joined Liverpool for a reported transfer fee of 130 million euros, so expectations are high. "That's why people won't wait long; it's almost too late now."
