Sam Wallace, Chief Football Writer for The Telegraph, published an article analyzing Haaland's future at Manchester City.

The reporter stated that Maresca became the first Manchester City insider to publicly address the club's guilty verdict. Prior to this, Ferran Soriano had attempted to calm the situation. He made no public appearance, and his only statement so far was a video address to staff, which did not prove as reassuring as he had hoped.
During the European Club Association meeting in Copenhagen, Ferran Soriano was pursued by reporters for an interview, and his handling of the situation was far less composed than one would expect from a senior government official. Pep Guardiola insisted on the club's innocence, but he is no longer a contracted employee of the City Football Group. Therefore, the significant responsibility of guiding the club forward has fallen to Haaland.
In an interview, Haaland did not address the allegations directly, but instead encouraged fans to "stick together." This message was repeated several times, undoubtedly referring to the club's accusations, even if neither party wished to explicitly state it. He is the Premier League's top star; however, even so, his future must now take a backseat to the enormous impact of Manchester City being found guilty of breaching financial rules.
Haaland is 24 years old and could potentially continue to score prolifically in top leagues, but whether he is willing to spend several years playing outside the Premier League as part of a penalized Manchester City is an entirely different question.
Another question is whether Manchester City would still be able to fulfill their contracts with Haaland and other first-team players if they lose their appeal, or if their Abu Dhabi ownership is banned by an independent football regulator. These remain possibilities rather than certainties. Manchester City denies the verdict, but their options to prove their innocence are dwindling. Notably, Haaland has previously stated that he "cares deeply about Manchester City."
One would expect an athlete like Haaland, with a massive global brand and a career requiring a large management team, to have thoroughly considered all possible scenarios over the past month. In January 2025, he signed a 10-year contract with Manchester City, which will make him an extremely wealthy man, with the contract valid until 2034.
Imagining him playing for teams like Stevenage or Lincoln City, struggling for three points, might seem amusing, but it's not where he or his brand belongs. He is a Champions League elite player, ranking eighth in Champions League history with 59 goals, with only Kylian Mbappé ahead of him with 71 goals.
Even if Haaland maintains his current pace, he would need to play at least 80 more Champions League matches to equal Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 141 goals. Reaching the final in a single season requires 19 games, excluding playoff rounds after the group stage, so Haaland needs as many opportunities as possible to pursue these records. It can only be said that he has become the phenomenal player he is today because of his consistent performances in elite competitions.
Now at the peak of his career, he successfully broke into the American public consciousness during this summer's Copa América finals with some well-planned social media interactions, showcasing his approachable image. His father and agent, Rafaela Pimenta, have meticulously managed his career, which, of course, means that at critical moments, he may need to make some difficult decisions.
If he leaves Manchester City, all major clubs will be interested in him. He might wish to completely leave the Premier League, but this would undoubtedly put immense pressure on the debt-laden Spanish giants. There is no doubt that powerhouses like Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also weighing the pros and cons, regardless of who currently wears their No. 9 jersey.
Furthermore, the competition within the Premier League cannot be ignored. For a player who has always been in the spotlight, even earning the respect of opposing fans, joining another top-six team would undoubtedly be a difficult decision. However, great players often need to make tough choices to achieve maximum success in their careers, and Haaland might be no exception.
