Welsh club Swansea City is working to shed their mediocre image and revive past glories, with Croatian star Luka Modric serving as a key driving force behind the transformation. Modric, currently playing for Real Madrid, became an investor and part-owner of Swansea in April 2025, injecting strong support into the club's project.

"This is a very exciting opportunity. Swansea has a distinct club identity, passionate fans, and ambitions to compete at the highest level. As a top player, I'm confident I can bring my experience to the club. My goal is to actively promote the club's growth and help build a bright future for the team."

The golden era of "Swanselona" is not far in the past: between 2011 and 2018, they spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League. With the help of players like Michu and Rangel, Michael Laudrup led the team to win the League Cup in the 2012-13 season.

Now, this Welsh team is once again on the path to revival. In their first nine Championship matches, Swansea has accumulated 20 points, topping the table by two points over second-place Middlesbrough and four points ahead of West Ham United and Stoke City. This also marks the club's best start to a season in its history since the introduction of the three-points system in the Championship.

Another turning point for the team came in late November 2025, when Vitor Matos, former assistant to Klopp at Liverpool, took over as manager. When he took charge, the team was in 20th place, just four points above the relegation zone. By the end of last season, he led the team to finish in 11th place, 17 points clear of the relegation zone. The club extended Matos's contract through 2030. Matos stated that progress is gradual, and while a solid foundation was laid last season, continued efforts are needed to keep moving forward.

The club has not neglected youth development; in preseason matches, they fielded a starting lineup with 10 academy graduates. Transfer activity has also been effective: the team retained their top scorer Zan Vipotnik, invested €26.6 million in new players, and recruited several loan signings.

The team continues to uphold the possession-based football philosophy of "Swanselona" from the past. Matos was named Championship Manager of the Month in August; the team leads the league with 4,845 passes and ranks second in possession with 59.4%. They rank sixth in goals scored and fourth in shots taken.

The defense is also solid: conceding only 7 goals, the fewest in the entire Championship, with 4 clean sheets, ranking first in the league. Their high defensive line and offside trap tactics have proven highly effective. With Modric's backing and steady improvement in squad strength, Swansea's dream of returning to the top flight has been reignited.
