Two exquisite Connor Jennings volleys earned Tranmere Rovers £500,000 on Monday night and ended Southport’s FA Cup dream.

The kitty for winning this second-round tie and the ensuing televised glamour home clash against Tottenham Hotspur should top half a million after Tranmere’s class told against non-league opposition.

More than 5,400 packed inside Haig Avenue, a far larger attendance than when they faced Fleetwood Town here two years ago in the same competition, and Southport certainly had their moments.

But Jennings’ quality was too much. The first volley, after 14 minutes, was caught sweetly 25 yards and the way the forward struck a swirling ball might have impressed watching Fleetwood boss Joey Barton.

His second, two minutes before half-time, was perfection in its simplicity. Jake Caprice fizzed a ball across and Jennings, swivelling on his standing leg, guided beyond Dan Hanford.

It was harsh on Liam Watson’s Southport, who threatened before and after the break. Liam Edwards drove an effort wide, while Bradley Bauress saw a stooping header well tipped over. Dion Charles also went close from distance.

Yet Tranmere’s frontline told, their guile and verve enough to make sure Mauricio Pochettino - who struggled at unfashionable grounds last year - will be heading to Prenton Park with Spurs next month.
