Vozinha's social media following skyrocketed along with his excellent performance in goal, which was a major highlight of this FIFA World Cup. Thanks to his heroic performance in goal for Cape Verde, this surprise figure of the 2026 FIFA World Cup saw his popularity on social media surge.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper had only 30,000 followers before the tournament, and now has risen to 29.4 million, a staggering increase. However, this was not enough to put him at the top of the FIFA World Cup's follower gain list.

Haaland Becomes Social Media King

According to data website Sportico, Haaland was the player who gained the most followers during the FIFA World Cup, with his follower count increasing by 32.1 million, from 40.6 million to 72.7 million. As a European star, the Norwegian was not the most familiar face to the American public before the tournament, but his many quirky posts on social media introduced many American fans to the Manchester City striker. The latest viral post was of him getting off a plane back in Norway, with a stuffed raccoon under his arm, and an empty whiskey bottle clutched between its front paws.

Among the top ten on Sportico's follower gain list is also a French player: Michael Olise. The low-key Bayern Munich player achieved explosive growth thanks to his performance for the French team, especially in the first few group stage matches, with his follower count almost doubling from 5.2 million to 10.9 million.
