According to Goal.com, 32-year-old Vincent Janssen is close to joining Major League Soccer. He will sign with the Portland Timbers as a free agent after departing Antwerp.

Janssen has already departed Antwerp this summer, allowing him to join on a free transfer. Sources say the Dutch forward will not occupy a Designated Player slot for the Portland Timbers. His arrival comes following forward Felipe Mora's transfer to Mexican club Atlético San Luis.

For Janssen, this marks a return to North America. Between 2019 and 2022, he played for Monterrey in Mexico, scoring 24 goals in three seasons and winning the CONCACAF Champions League with the club in 2021.

Last season, as captain of Antwerp, Janssen scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists in 40 official matches, accumulating 3,579 minutes of play.

Janssen rose to prominence at AZ Alkmaar. In the 2015/16 season, he won the Eredivisie Golden Boot with 27 league goals. This performance earned him a move to Tottenham for approximately $25 million, the largest transfer of his career.

The forward has earned 22 caps for the Netherlands, scoring 7 goals. He was included in the Netherlands squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

At Portland Timbers, Janssen will work under newly appointed head coach Martí Cifuentes. He is the club's first major signing of the summer, with expectations the team will continue strengthening during the transfer window.

The former Alkmaar forward will compete for starts with 21-year-old Venezuelan international Kevin Kelsy, who has scored 8 goals in MLS this season.

Portland currently sits 10th in the Western Conference, just 2 points outside a playoff spot with 17 league matches remaining.
