Manchester City star Rayan Ait-Nouri has been dismissed from international duty after an altercation with Algeria's staff.

The defender, 25, appeared enraged at the decision to leave him on the bench in the 3-1 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Zambia.

Footage circulated on social media shows the full-back gesticulating in frustration after being denied a chance to get on the pitch.

Algerian outlet Ennahar reports that Ait-Nouri had been asked to warm-up by manager Brahim Hemdani, only to be sat back down when Zambia scored.

He then 'rejected all attempts to calm him down' from general manager Moussa Saib and his team-mates, causing a 'great stir'.

Algeria have now announced his departure, saying: 'The national coach, Mr Brahim Hemdani decided this Saturday to release the player Rayan Ait-Nouri from the current training camp of the national team.

'The Algerian international will return to his club, Manchester City.'

Ait-Nouri has racked up 34 caps for Algeria and starred in the World Cup over the summer, but the Paris-born man also holds French nationality.

It has been a frustrating time for the former Wolves star, who is yet to feature in the Premier League this campaign.

When he has played, he has been highly effective. He provided two assists in the 5-0 demolition of Norwich in the Carabao Cup third round, while he also assisted Erling Haaland off the bench against Porto in the Champions League.

He signed for City in July last year for £33.7million and was a bit-part player in his first campaign too.

Enzo Maresca has generally preferred the marauding Josko Gvardiol on the left side of his defence.

Manchester United made a shock deadline day swoop for him, enquiring about a loan, but would not commit to an obligation to buy, an arrangement which would have been acceptable to City.
