Cody Gakpo revealed it was a "difficult summer" after his potential move to Manchester City from Liverpool fell through.

Gakpo had a turbulent summer after the World Cup, with his future at Anfield remaining up in the air for the majority of the transfer window.

He was initially linked with a move to Tottenham before it emerged in the final days of the window that City were interested in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium.

However, the deal fell through in the final hours of deadline day, with Gakpo ultimately staying at Liverpool.

"I don't know if you want to go into detail about that, but there's no point in talking about it," Gakpo told The Telegraph.

"It was a difficult summer for me, my family and everything to do with football and life. So yeah, I just let it happen, and it ended the way it ended.

"It's a very long story. The summer was very tough, on all fronts. I just let it all sink in and saw how it would go, and it went this way.

"Now it is what it is. I just want to enjoy my life with my family and friends. And from playing football with my team-mates here and at the club."

Gakpo has made a strong start to the 2026-27 season for Liverpool, making six appearances under Andoni Iraola so far.

He has already racked up six goal involvements in all competitions – two goals and four assists – more than any other player for the club.

His 13 chances created, meanwhile, are second only to Dominik Szoboszlai.

"When you play for a big club like Liverpool, you have to perform," Gakpo, who also scored for the Netherlands in their 1-1 draw with Germany on Thursday, added.

"I don't want to talk about others or other players, but I know I could have done much better myself than last year.

"I don't know if the criticism was unfair. Maybe it was, but in a way, I understand it.

"At Liverpool, you have to win, perform and show that you are one of the best clubs in the world. We didn't do that last year, including myself. That's just the way it goes."
