England defender John Stones has been found guilty of speeding, according to The Times. He failed to respond to the fixed penalty notice sent by police in time because he was with the England squad at the World Cup this summer, which resulted in the case proceeding to court.

On May 8 this year at 10:40 AM, Stones was caught by a speed camera driving a Land Rover valued at approximately £150,000 at 43 mph in a 30 mph zone near his Cheshire home.

After Cheshire Police first contacted Stones, he admitted he was the driver. However, he did not respond to a second letter subsequently sent by the police, which would have allowed him to settle the offense by paying a fixed penalty and avoid a court case.

Due to his failure to respond in time, Stones was prosecuted and found guilty last week through a single justice procedure. Warrington Magistrates' Court penalised him with 4 points on his driving licence, a £666 fine, and ordered him to pay £120 in court costs and a £266 surcharge.

Stones explained to the court: "Regarding the speeding itself, I have nothing to say. I only responded to this offense now because I was playing for England in the FIFA World Cup and was not at home to see any letters."

"I sent the letter with my personal information on May 28 and then reported for England duty. We remained away until July 19. After that, I went on holiday and then moved to Milan. The letter was only discovered by chance, as no one had been home for nearly four months. This is also why I cannot appear in court in person, as I no longer live in the UK."

Stones ended his 10-year career with Manchester City this summer, joining Internazionale. During the World Cup, he was included in England's 26-man squad, started in the first group stage match, and later featured in England's 1-0 quarter-final victory over France and the semi-final loss to Argentina.

Since his England debut in 2014, Stones has made 94 appearances for the Three Lions. At club level, he played 295 games for Manchester City across all competitions and has made 4 appearances for Internazionale since joining this season.
