The controversy intensified after Cristiano Ronaldo withdrew from Portugal's national team camp. Cristiano was not originally scheduled to play, but Jorge Jesús told him to warm up, claiming he planned to bring him on, only to ultimately not do so. Piers Morgan retweeted a 2024 Ancelotti interview to mock Jesús.

On January 17, 2024, in matchday 22 of LaLiga 2023/24, Real Madrid defeated Las Palmas 2-1 away, with Modric not playing. After the match, a journalist asked: "Why didn't Modric play a single minute today, and didn't even warm up?"

Ancelotti responded: "If I'm not sure he's going to play, I won't ask Modric to warm up. I respect him too much to do that."
