Manchester City is embroiled in 114 charges of Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations. An independent commission has found the club guilty, and Manchester City is appealing. This has sparked a debate in the football world: if Manchester City's past titles are revoked, should Manchester United, who finished as runners-up in the 2011-12 season, be awarded that Premier League title? Michael Owen, who was playing for Manchester United at the time, has expressed his views on the matter.

In the 2011-12 season, Manchester City dramatically won the Premier League title with a last-minute goal from Sergio Aguero, and Owen was a Manchester United player at that time. In an interview with GOAL, Owen stated that even if he were eligible to receive a retroactive winner's medal, he personally would not want that honor.
"It all depends on the final verdict. This is just an initial ruling; there's still an appeals process, and several possibilities exist: stripping titles, fines, transfer bans, points deductions, or even relegation. If the extent of the violations is as rumored, the penalties will surely be severe and taken seriously. Theoretically, I might receive an extra league medal, but that means nothing to me. Football is about memories, not receiving a trophy retroactively a decade or two later. The value of a medal lies in the personal feeling of winning it at that moment. I wouldn't wish ill on others to benefit myself. I've earned my own honors, and I don't care about these now. It's an unfortunate situation, and the whole thing will drag on for a long time. We can only await the final outcome."
Reports indicate that if multiple Manchester City titles are expunged from the historical record, several runner-up teams from those years would retroactively receive honors, but many potential beneficiaries are unwilling to accept such posthumous titles. Manchester City is accused of numerous fraudulent commercial operations between 2009 and 2018, precisely the period during which they established their dominance, winning multiple Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup trophies. The specific penalties have not yet been announced, and the appeals process is ongoing.
