Atletico Madrid will be looking to repeat the feat they achieved in 2014 when they beat Real Madrid to lift the Supercopa de Espana when they meet in the final of the same competition in Jeddah on Sunday.

On that occasion, league winners Atletico took a 1-1 draw away from the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg before Mario Mandzukic's only goal settled the tie at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Those two matches came just a few months after Atletico had lost to their neighbours in the Champions League final in Lisbon.

"Playing another final against them so soon after and winning it speaks for the heart that that team had," Juanfran told MARCA from Brazil.

"Then, [the final] was two matches and the first leg went well for us at the Bernabeu," Miranda told MARCA from China.

"We got a draw and then at the Calderon, in front of our fans, we were the better team and we won 1-0.

"Atletico were very difficult to beat at that time, we played on the counter attack and relied on the strength of our defence."

"[Raul Garcia]'s goal at the Bernabeu gave us life," said Juanfran.

Garcia equalised late on in the first leg to cancel out James Rodriguez's opener for the hosts which had come just a few minutes before.

"The return leg was my first match at the Calderon," Guilherme Siqueira told MARCA.

"I was super nervous because I'd never played there - I was injured and suspended when Granada visited there.

"I'd only been on the pitch for my presentation, but it was amazing to make my debut in a derby and win my first trophy. We played a great game."

A different era

"Today, Atleti have improved a lot but, in order to beat Real Madrid, it has to be about having a very strong team defensively and relying on the quality and pace of your forwards," Miranda said.

"Atletico know how to win now, it's their opponents who have to worry about knowing how to combat the intensity that El Cholo asks from his team," Siqueira said.

"Simeone knows Real Madrid well, I'm convinced that he will prepare his weapons for their weak spots, if they have any. I'm sure that things will go well."
