At 4 PM (CET) on October 4, Alan Shearer updated his personal column with commentary on the performances of Gordon, Alexander-Arnold, and other England squad players.

Barcelona move has allowed Gordon to reach his best potential
Gordon delivered an outstanding performance against the Czech Republic, arguably the standout player of the match, showing excellent chemistry with Lewis Hall on the left flank. We only glimpsed Gordon's potential at Newcastle, and it was clear he wanted to leave. Now he looks full of energy. His performance shows he's happy with his summer transfer decision—something we rarely saw from him at Newcastle last season. There's nothing wrong with that; you always have the right to make decisions based on your career plans. Now Gordon is in a happy place, both with England and at AC Milan.
Lewis Hall can cement his position as England's primary left-back
Lewis Hall has the potential to establish himself as England's first-choice left-back. He's an extremely talented player and also showed good attacking prowess. England has two strong options in this position, but Nico O'Reilly offers different qualities compared to Hall, and O'Reilly can also play in midfield.
What works in Hall's favor for England is his understanding with Gordon. Clearly, we haven't seen this partnership at the summer World Cup, but I think the key aspect of Tuesday's match against the Czech Republic was the understanding between these two players. They played together at Newcastle, know each other well, and have established good chemistry.
Alexander-Arnold's attacking ability is a valuable asset for England
Alexander-Arnold also performed well against the Czech Republic. Sometimes England faces difficulties in matches, and Alexander-Arnold can help the team; Tuesday was the perfect opportunity for him to make an impact.
England wasn't tested much defensively, but the key moment came early in the second half when England needed him most—Alexander-Arnold created an opportunity with a fantastic cross for Gordon. I understand Alexander-Arnold may face criticism for his defending, but I also see the positive aspects he brings and his performance on the ball.
When facing opponents who sit deep defensively, you need his greatest strengths even more—whether it's passing, crossing, or those "magical" goal-scoring opportunities, he can open up chances for the team. Perhaps Alexander-Arnold isn't ideally suited to face Spain or teams of similar caliber, where defensive pressure is higher, but in terms of ball control, when he has possession, few are better than him.
Modrić's continued play at 41 is truly admirable
Modrić is a superstar, and I particularly admire his attitude. He rarely speaks, focuses solely on the match, and has performed brilliantly over many years. Playing at 41 is an achievement worthy of admiration, especially representing his national team, though some might think he can no longer surpass himself. However, the way he handles the ball over the years has been extraordinary. A glorious career, truly remarkable.
Can Klopp help Germany become Euro and World Cup contenders?
I would be surprised if he could. A major question Klopp must answer after taking over as Germany's head coach is: Can he restore Germany to a position of strength in international football? He took over when German football was at a low point. I commentated on several Germany matches at the World Cup; they were eliminated in the group stage and showed poor form.
I don't think Germany has an abundance of outstanding players; they only have one or two truly exceptional individuals. But if Klopp could bring them back to the highest level and make them contenders for the Euro and World Cup titles, I'd be surprised. I don't think this will happen in the short term because they lack the talent necessary to become contenders for major trophies, despite Klopp's exceptional coaching ability.
Wirtz has not yet shown his true potential at Manchester City
Manchester City still hasn't seen Wirtz's true capabilities. We occasionally see him perform well, but we haven't consistently seen him deliver the kind of breakthroughs that make us say: "Well, this guy is truly amazing—no wonder they spent so much money to sign him."
Whether he can make a significant impact at Manchester City remains to be seen. In the Premier League, you rarely have much time to showcase yourself because the competition is so intense. There's no doubt he possesses extraordinary talent, but whether he can consistently deliver such performances for Manchester City, I'm not sure.
