Congratulations from the heart! Among all the records and achievements you've accomplished—and we know what playing for England means to you—is this achievement the most special of all your accomplishments?
Yes, I think this is one of the most important achievements of my career. There have been many significant moments in my career. Looking back at my England debut, being selected for the national team was a dream come true. Reaching this point, I think it has exceeded my expectations. Matching my teammate's record of 125 appearances is the highest honor for me. I love every time I attend England's training camp. I love playing in every match, and representing our country in the best way possible.
Tonight is a very special evening. As I said before the match, the most important thing is to win. This isn't about me personally, but about the whole team. Achieving this goal by scoring two goals, showing good team performance, and finishing off a great week makes this a perfect night for me.
That's very much your style—not only scoring two goals but also creating chances for your teammates. How disappointed were you to be substituted when you were close to a hat-trick?
Haha, yes, that's part of the game of course. I think Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been doing very well throughout the training camp. It's clear he hasn't played much before this, so it's good to give him time on the pitch. With his hard work in training, he fully deserved this opportunity.
You know my nature well—of course I want to play every minute of every game. However, it's also about keeping everyone fit and sharp. We have a long season ahead, and I believe the coach always considers the bigger picture. We need rotation and squad depth. So even though I'd obviously like to stay on the pitch, scoring two goals and winning 3-0 is what matters most.
Harry, congratulations again. We've previously interviewed several of your coaches from Tottenham Hotspur's academy and youth teams. They all praised your exceptional goalscoring ability and your diligent attitude to extra training after sessions. However, even they admitted they never expected you to reach this level today. Have you always had this level of determination? Did you ever think you'd reach this level and break these historic records?
I didn't know for certain back then that I'd be able to reach this level. But I've always had strong confidence in myself. I was always willing to put in more effort than others and constantly push myself forward. I believe everyone has their own limits, and I've combined natural talent with hard work, strong confidence, and relentless dedication. Since I got the opportunity, I've held onto it, and the key ever since has been not letting it slip. To consistently perform at the highest level, you need to always have hunger. You need to be committed to improving further.
I think sometimes players, or people in general, after reaching the peak might feel they can relax and rest a bit, and that's often when a player's performance starts to decline. For me, it's the opposite. When I'm at the peak, I want to do more, to find ways to improve further. That's what I'm doing now. I just finished the best season of my career, and I've started this season just as well as the last one. So I'm in a very good place right now, and for me, it's about continuing to push myself and seeing how far I can go.
If you were to give advice to young players now, would it be this—push yourself to the maximum, go further than before?
Yes, I think everyone's situation is different, and everyone has their own unique development path. Obviously, my career path is very different from some of the players playing today. But I think ultimately, everyone's career will have its ups and downs—that's inevitable. There will be times when you need to have unwavering belief in yourself, when you need to work harder behind the scenes that no one sees, whether it's extra shooting practice, dietary adjustments, or anything else.
I think what's most important is to have no regrets. If you've given everything you have and still don't achieve success, that's life—that's the harsh reality of sports or any industry. But give yourself the best possible chance, and if you do that, no matter what the outcome is, you can hold your head high.
Harry, you've played 125 matches for the national team in just 11 years, while Peter Shilton took 20 years to achieve that. Clearly you've missed just 28 games during this time, which is a truly impressive appearance record. During this period, were there times when you had to play while injured, endure pain on the pitch, or have you maintained 100% fitness throughout?
No, of course there have been times when I've had to play while injured or slightly hurt. I think every professional footballer has experienced playing through pain, minor discomfort, or slight injuries at some point in their career. Early in my international career, I missed a few sessions due to ankle injuries. But over the past six years or so, I've consistently maintained very good health and fitness.
In elite sport competition, player availability is one of the greatest strengths a coach can have. Everyone knows what being with the national team and these players means to me. There have been periods when I couldn't play due to my physical condition, but I think being with the team is very important, because I have other qualities off the pitch that can help the team.
So I've always felt that one day this opportunity won't be there anymore. After all, I can't play forever—though I hope that time is still far away—but ultimately there will definitely come times when I'm tired or injured. But I know that when all of this is completely over, I will miss it greatly. So I constantly remind myself to stay ready and available whenever I can.
