The Telegraph reports that Gary Neville has been extraordinarily busy this week, delivering sharp commentary on Manchester City's scandal that far exceeds his usual standard of outspoken remarks.

He has been churning out vast quantities of opinion on City's situation, marking what may be his most prolific week of commentary since the European Super League controversy. His podcast even released an emergency special episode, a rare occurrence in peacetime. Neville has previously defined his role in football: "I'm not a media pundit; I'm just a content creator."
This week, he has delivered an avalanche of commentary through his "Stick to Football" show and Sky Sports appearances.
Last weekend, in a Sky Sports interview, he discussed Manchester City's punishment controversy in quintessential Neville fashion. Sporting Eric Morecambe-style glasses, his opinions were delivered with crystalline clarity and cut straight to the heart of the matter.
"The Premier League is our greatest export to the world, but right now it's being dragged through the mud," Neville said, deploying harsh language directed at Manchester City's leadership. He believes the club's current owners are unfit to retain their ownership.
Neville seems to simultaneously cast himself as judge, jury, and executioner; though to be fair, many commentators do this. What sets Neville apart is that he also positions himself as a voice for the aggrieved parties in these matters.
Football is always about "passion," but Neville connects with public sentiment by acting as though he himself has been wronged, as though this issue directly affects him personally.
This was true during the Super League row, and it rings true now. He declared: "Owning a football club in this country is one of the heaviest responsibilities you can bear, and it must be undertaken seriously."
Oh Gary, I'm almost moved to tears.
There is another matter worth examining seriously: his extensive real estate holdings, such as purchasing properties in Manchester—a pursuit that keeps him busy when he's not creating content. In 2023, he gave an intriguing interview to Arabian Gulf Business Observer magazine. Reading this publication is always a unique experience; you might also notice its peculiar sections, such as one titled "Readers' Bound Domestic Help."
"Strip away Manchester's veneer, and the city has been built by local developers and local people, but it also draws partners from around the world, both within and outside the UK," Neville said.
Well, that's quite a historical perspective, nicely put, Gary. Yet this commentary feels oddly convenient. Why say such a thing? At that very time, he was developing a luxury residential project in Manchester. According to Arabian Gulf Business Observer, one-fifth of the apartments in that development had been purchased by UAE investors.
I haven't been to Manchester in a long time, but from what I can see, even just stepping off a train at Piccadilly or Oxford Road, you can hardly avoid conducting business with wealthy Emirati businesspeople. Back then, the place was full of flat caps and Boddington's beer, and life was far simpler.
Whenever the conversation turns to the Middle East and money, Neville's convictions tend to soften. In 2020, he produced a high-quality documentary focused on Qatar, exposing the suffering of those behind the construction of World Cup stadiums. The film posed hard questions and dared to demand accountability. Yet it must be said that his subsequent role as a commentator for Qatar's national broadcaster somewhat undermined the documentary's stance.
But no one is perfect, and when enormously wealthy Emirati individuals own vast fortunes, matters become inherently complicated, don't they? Ironically, when Neville confines his discussion to football, his analysis is at its strongest, and his views on Manchester City retain considerable value.
Much more high-quality commentary is expected in the days ahead.
