According to Goal, the German national team faces a challenging dilemma in selecting players for the attacking midfield position, as Musiala and Wirtz may struggle to start together.

"If it were up to me, Musiala and Wirtz could certainly play together. But if Kimmich is the only holding midfielder, then combining Musiala and Wirtz would be too attacking-minded against the strongest teams. In Klopp's system, this means either Musiala or Wirtz," Matthäus said in an interview with Sport Bild.

In four recent international matches, Klopp has temporarily avoided this issue by fielding Bayern Munich's Musiala in the first two matches against the Netherlands and Greece. Wirtz was initially scheduled for the second group, expected to play against Serbia and Greece, but was called up early after Musiala suffered an injury during warm-up before the match against the Netherlands.

"If both can return to their best form, they are certainly our two finest players. It seems unreasonable to have one of them sitting on the bench," Matthäus said. He also recalled a similar dilemma in German football at the 1974 World Cup: "Back then, people would ask: Günter Netzer or Wolfgang Overath?"

"If Klopp could provide the answer: Musiala and Wirtz! I would be delighted. But I don't think we'll see this solution at Euro 2028," concluded the 65-year-old former player.

Musiala made his debut for the German national team in March 2021 and has since earned 46 caps, scoring 10 goals. In 2022, he was also named Germany's International Player of the Year.

Wirtz has 48 caps and 12 goals since making his German national team debut in September 2021.
