According to Sport, after Umtiti was criticized for his role as a television commentator during the FIFA World Cup, M6 Group Chairman Nicolas de Tavernost publicly supported him.

In an interview with L'Équipe, Nicolas de Tavernost praised the tournament's broadcast, calling it the "biggest advertising event" in M6's history, and took the opportunity to address external doubts about Umtiti's role.

“I think Umtiti is a very good partner for Julien Brun. As the third commentator for France's matches, he works with Xavier Domergue and Benoît Cheyrou, not to replace Benoît as a commentator, but to know when to bring in his experience from the 2018 FIFA World Cup,” the group chairman said.

Nicolas de Tavernost was more forceful about the criticism of Umtiti: "These criticisms are completely unfounded! He is working seriously and doing a great job; we are very satisfied with it."

The head of M6 made it clear that the channel still has full confidence in the former Barcelona player and firmly believes that his experience at the highest level of play can bring additional value to the French team's broadcasts.

During the interview, Nicolas de Tavernost also responded to another criticism regarding M6's broadcast style, specifically that the channel quickly cut to post-match programs after France's matches.

"By the semi-finals, we will do everything we can to change that." He also defended the post-match program format. "Ophélie Meunier is an excellent host, surrounded by a group of people who have something to say. Like our commentators, they have found the right way to express themselves, addressing both the most passionate fans and complete novices."

Nicolas de Tavernost's statement shows that Umtiti still has the support of the M6 Group. The former player, who won the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018 but later saw his form decline due to a knee injury, is now taking new steps in his career as a commentator.
